I’m pretty new to HDR(i), I don’t think that 14 exposure was an overkill. I was reading somewhere that the more, the better!
I guess it highly depends on what software & algorithm you are using when toning the HDR(i) too. I did try it with 3 & 5 they were not as detailed & impressive as this one.

As for my kit, my current camera is a 5 yrs old Minolta Z1. with couple of add on lenses & filters. Looking forward to get the Canon T1i pretty soon.
